How was the name "vodka" born? It is believed that the word "vodka" is in writing (on an official document of the national scale!) it appeared in the decree of Elizabeth I, the Russian Empress. It happened in June 1750. However, the word "vodka" was not widely used in those years. The alcoholic beverage that designated it was for a long time called "pennik", then "moonshine", then "semi-sugar". And the preparation of moonshine was used throughout Russia. Therefore, the authorship of the word "vodka"; It is attributed not to Elizabeth the First, but to Alexander Pushkin. It was the great Russian poet who described in one of his works (namely in the Captain's Daughter) the scene where his characters drink the so-called aniseed vodka. There was also a scene in "Eugene Onegin" that talks about "Russian vodka". So, with the light hand of the poet, the name "vodka" went to the people and began to be actively used.
As a clarification: vodka is a Polish word, translated as "water". In writing, "vodka" was mentioned in the judicial acts of one of the Polish cities in 1405.
And then where did the chemist Mendeleev come from next to vodka, why is vodka preparation associated with his name? The myth that a supposedly Russian chemist invented 40-degree vodka "Moscow special" was spread by Pokhlebkin in his book "The History of Vodka".
